Speaking in Public Tips

By Olivia Mac Dollan

Think about the last time you addressed an audience. It might have been a requirement for your job, for your show abilities class, for Masters of ceremonies, or for your leads group. Maybe you toasted the bride or groom or were introducing a guest presenter at your Local Community Club. What was the expression on your face? Did it say that you were glad to be there or was contemptible fear written all over it?

Regardless of what the locale, how your audience perceives you will be decided by what your face is exclaiming as well as your subconscious movements and the vocal variety in your voice. If your face is expressing dread, catastrophe or dismay, then your message will come thru in that demeanour because your nervousness will be in control of your voice, your body, and your facial expression.

While you may be in pain at the lectern, your audience shouldn't see it or hear it. If they can feel your pain as it were then you are putting them in an uncomfortable position also. They deserve your best. And that isn't possible if your face is expressing your fear.

You can control your anxiety by way of treating your audience as if you were chatting with them. There actually is small difference between public presenting and conversing if you open your mind to that comparison and really look at the picture. Yes, you are speaking; your audience could be smiling, nodding their heads in harmony, or most likely even shaking their heads disapprovingly.

However they are reacting to your words is the other part of the conversation. Because they won't be verbally speaking back to you, doesn't mean that they're not part of the communication process. In reality this is so important in public presenting that if you're unaware of their reaction to you, then you are actually ignorant of what your words mean to them. If such is the case, you aren't chatting with your audience but instead chatting at them.

When you can address your listeners and take control of your anxiousness, allowing it to work for you with that fantastic rush of adrenaline, then your face will express your pleasure, your delight, in chatting to them.
