How to Find Inspiration for Your Fiction Writing

By J. Bailey

Every writer knows that the creative process behind fiction writing can be challenging and draining. Fiction writing takes strength and part of this is finding the ideas that will make your art come alive. It all takes the right mindset and daily routine to make it fall into place. If you're suffering from writer's block, take a look at our ways to revive your creativity and encourage inspiration.

Fiction Writing Tips

Taking Time Off - Whether you're struggling with a particularly tricky dialogue, or finding a character hard to communicate, taking some time off is often the best remedy. Fiction writing crowds the mind and taking a break allows you to focus on something other than this task. Do whatever it is that you enjoy; see friends, visit art galleries or go for a walk. It doesn't matter what it is, it gives you an opportunity to clear your mind and leave it open to new ideas.

Multi-Task Writing - Fiction writing takes a lot of energy and can often be an intense process. If you're struggling for inspiration, you may wish to try switching up your daily routine and adding extra creative tasks. This doesn't have to be challenging, just something basic to maintain your focus. As well as breaking up your writing, why not experiment with different spaces? Many famous writers say they can only work in certain rooms or public spaces, so try and find the setting that works best for you.

Go Back to the Classics - Still struggling? Try re-educating yourself and go back to the classic writers for inspiration. Not only is this enjoyable, but it's a great way to relieve pressure and discover new ideas. Whether you're trying to write a prologue or a dialogue there will be something out there to help. Here are some you may want to start with: Sylvia Plath, Lord Byron, Charles Dickens and Virginia Woolf.

Be Realistic: A vital lesson to learn from fiction writing is to be realistic. Ideas and inspiration will only come if you can release the pessimism that you encounter from writer's block. Being in the right frame of mind is the first step to discover your next ingenious idea.
