The Benefits Of Public Speaking

By Tiffany Nash

For most people, their hearts will start to pound like a kettledrum and their hands will to clammy because of the mere thought that they would have to speak before an audience. According to statistics, people are more afraid of public speaking that they do their own deaths. A majority of people would rather die in silence rather than take a chance to speak their minds in society. Maybe it's conformity and a fear of saying something irrelevant.

The importance in public speaking lies in the fact that as social organisms, the ability to get your message across in the right way will do more good for you than the attempt to do a better job. Hunkering down faithfully to work is virtually useless if the boss does not even notice it.

Public speaking is vital and this lies in the fact that it is inevitable. Sooner or later, entering the arena is what you will be forced to do and you need to speak to a sea of eyes and ears. Before that happens, it would always be better to meet that challenge on your terms.

Here are some points you can think about.

Effects on your career. For those who can communicate better at work, they can go up the ladder faster. Employers prefer hiring people with public speaking and communication skills. This is because speaking with your colleagues puts them at ease about you, helps you get your job done faster, and gets what you want done across much more easier.

Mental health. Feeling better about yourself is a plus. Improving your self-confidence, poise, character and sense of fun is successfully speaking before a live, listening audience. Besides being less nervous and self-conscious, you will also be able to control higher levels of stress. However, this doesn't mean that you won't be making mistakes. You will be making mistakes for the first few times and what you can do is learn from them and keep going on. If you're consistent, that paralyzing fear of speaking to a large audience will be a thing of the past.

Your opportunities. Having a positive impact on all aspects of your life is public speaking. In your former life, being able to speak publicly will open up new opportunities unimagined. Besides interacting with more people of the opposite sex, you will also find yourself to be more eager when it comes to participating in causes you sincerely believe in. You will find yourself assertively asking questions to clear up a problem, take the lead in a cause, or calmly explain a thorny situation without losing it. Public speaking therefore has an exponential effect on your life.

Public speaking is an essential addition to the human repertoire. Technical knowledge is just as vital, but the ability to speak well takes your abilities and talents beyond the borders of your own skin and into the hearts and minds of others.
